FAQ for Parents

Here you'll find answers to the most common questions about flag football at Potsdam Bay Pirates. Still unsure? Write to us: vorstand@potsdambaypirates.de

Getting Started & Trial Training
Flag football is the non-contact version of American football. Instead of tackling the ball carrier, you pull a flag from their belt. There is no physical contact — making it ideal for children from age 8. Kids still learn all the tactical and athletic foundations of football: passing, running routes, and teamwork.
We train children from age 8. Our teams are organized by age group:

U10 — children up to age 9
U13 — children aged 10 to 12

If you're unsure which group fits your child, just reach out.
Your child can join for 4 weeks completely free — no commitment, no membership required. Just show up in sports clothes and try it out. You decide afterwards whether a membership makes sense.
A quick registration via our online form helps us prepare — but it's not required. You're welcome to just show up. Registration takes 2 minutes.
Costs & Membership
Active membership (players):
• One-time registration fee: €50.00
• Monthly fee: €25.00

Supporting membership (without active playing, e.g. for parents):
• Monthly fee: €40.00

Trial training (4 weeks) is completely free of charge.
We support families for whom membership is financially difficult. Just speak to us directly — we'll find a solution together. Membership may also be covered by the Bildungs- und Teilhabepaket (BuT) social support program if applicable.
For trial training, regular sports clothing and appropriate footwear are all that's needed. Flag belts and training equipment are provided.

Important: We train and play on artificial turf, natural grass and athletics track (tartan), depending on availability and weather. Please bring the right footwear:
  • Artificial turf / natural grass: Turf shoes or moulded studs (no metal studs!)
  • Athletics track (tartan): regular running shoes or indoor shoes
  • No spikes and no regular street shoes.
Appropriate footwear is mandatory — please bring it from your very first training session.
Training & Day-to-Day
Current training times and location are listed on our training page. We train regularly in Potsdam — times, weekday and address are kept up to date there.
Regular sports clothes are perfectly fine — t-shirt, shorts or tracksuit, and appropriate footwear. A rain jacket is handy for wet weather as we train outside whenever possible. We use artificial turf, natural grass and tartan tracks — please pack suitable shoes (turf/moulded studs for grass, running shoes for tartan). Nothing else is needed besides sports clothes.
No, that's not necessary. Your child is in good hands with us. Many parents choose to stay and watch at first — which is always welcome. We're always available for questions.
Yes — our first official season starts in autumn 2026. Until then, the focus is on training and team development. Children will be invited to tournaments in good time; parental attendance is voluntary but always welcome.
All important information — schedule changes, training cancellations, news — is communicated by email. For urgent questions, please contact us directly at: vorstand@potsdambaypirates.de
Safety & Insurance
Yes. All active members are covered by accident insurance through the Landessportbund (LSB) Brandenburg. Insurance also applies during the 4-week trial period — your child is protected from day one.
Flag football is one of the safest team sports for children. There is no physical contact — no tackling, no blocking. The injury risk is comparable to other running sports. Our coaches ensure age-appropriate, safe training at all times.
Our coaching team will be introduced shortly. For questions about our coaches, feel free to contact us directly: vorstand@potsdambaypirates.de
Membership can be terminated at the end of a calendar quarter (31 Mar, 30 Jun, 30 Sep, or 31 Dec). Notice must be given to the board at least 1 month in advance in text form — an email to vorstand@potsdambaypirates.de is sufficient.
