How we train
Training — Potsdam Bay Pirates
Every training session follows a clear structure — from warm-up to cool-down. This is how children learn effectively, safely and with fun.
🏃 Warm-up
Every session starts with a structured warm-up. Light running exercises, coordination drills and dynamic stretching prepare the body for activity and prevent injuries. The warm-up typically lasts 10–15 minutes.
🎯 Drills
The drill block focuses on specific individual techniques — passing, catching, running routes, pulling flags. Each drill has a clear objective and is progressively built upon. This gives children a solid technical foundation before moving into game play.
📋 Position Training
Flag football has clearly defined positions: quarterback, wide receiver, center, rusher and defensive back. In position training, players learn their specific role — what their job is, where they stand on the field and how they work with their teammates.
⚡ Scrimmage
In the scrimmage section, the team plays — under real game conditions, but within a safe training environment. Children apply what they have learned, develop game understanding and learn to make the right decisions under light pressure. This is most children's favourite part.
🤝 Team Building
Flag football is a team sport — and that is reflected in training too. Team building elements at the end of each session strengthen cohesion, encourage communication and ensure that all children feel welcome — regardless of experience or skill level.
